TWENTY-EIGHT

HIS NAME WAS Seb Luppi and, for his sins, he still fondly imagined himself a journalist. I didn’t have the heart to point out the obvious; that covering ultratripper antics for a drooling fandom or who’s fucking who among the Bradbury glitterati might deserve a variety of job titles—dung beetle, maybe, or public pacification op—but journalist was not one of them. That’d be like calling the dancers offering three-minute handjobs out the back of Vallez Girlz nirvana dispensers.

But let it go—I didn’t have any operational incentive to upset Luppi. When your job involves waking up aboard a hurtling canister full of spilled shit in deep space, you learn to case the environment at speed and then work with what you have at hand. That includes the people around you. Luppi had parachuted himself into the middle of this mess—which showed some grit, given the head butt I’d stuck on him at Bradbury Central—and I figured he could be useful. Tempting to crack the lid on his obvious self-loathing, throw him down the well of his own existential remorse, and watch him drown, but that got me nothing useful in the end.

Far better to use that same self-loathing as leverage and put him to work.
